The Framework

Graphic with a circle divided into three equal parts, labeled Positive Narrative, Safety, and Guidelines, encompassed by a circle labeled StrategySafety is critical, but not the only consideration. The best messages are informed by all four Framework elements: Strategy, Safety, Positive Narrative, and Guidelines.

Safety focuses on the DON’TSwhat to avoid. There’s no single list of “Do’s” because there’s no one-size-fits-all “right” message for every situation. Decide on message content by:

  • Starting with Strategy questions (e.g., What are your overall goals? How can communications help? Who do you want to reach? What action do you want them to take? Etc.)
  • Finding ways to promoting a Positive Narrative about suicide prevention by incorporating actions, solutions, successes, or resources.
  • Consulting the Guidelines page to use any existing guidelines or best practices that apply to your particular messages.
